You might think that therapy is only for people who feel extremely distressed, want a mental health diagnosis, need to be in therapy for years and years, or need medication. These things might apply to some people but that is not the case for everybody.

I sometimes think that everybody might not benefit from therapy (due to poor therapist-client compatibility, their opinions about therapy, their economic conditions to afford good quality care, and other factors). However, most people can utilize therapy as a tool to refine their lifestyle skills, understand themselves better, or gain different perspectives about a situation they are facing.

People-pleasing can more often than not be frustrating and stop us from cultivating self-worth

instagram.com

Psyche_Bubbles on Instagram: "People-pleasing can sometimes feel like a foolproof plan to ensure that we are liked, or not rejected by others. But the truth is, that despite pushing aside our needs to please others, there is no guarantee that everybody will like us. Often people pleasing can create a belief that our actions determine others emotions, i.e., other's will reciprocate all of our actions through acceptance or liking. But it gets really exhausting to read the room and shoulder the responsibility of understanding others (when they might not even have that expectation from us); it can leave us feeling sad and puts others in an unfair position too (where they might feel forced to reciprocate our efforts).

Becoming aware of the reasons behind people pleasing, our emotions about making others happy and also disregarding our own, determining which thoughts come up from a place of people-pleasing and trying to not pay attention to them can be a few steps that help. But talking to someone, like a therapist, can help take a structured approach to achieve these goals. People -pleasing is not the occassional act of selflessness, or doing something for others; it is the consistent efforts to disregard ourselves and prioritize others for the purpose of acceptance or to avoid rejection.

Happy International Women's Day. I wanted to make an animated clip just for fun but while drawing it I kept on thinking what caption to write. It made me realize that as a mental health professional and a woman I wanted to celebrate researchers working to decrease the gender gap in research on different clinical interventions or diagnosis in the field of psychology and medicine; I wanted to celebrate women who dedicate their time and effort to raising kids, taking care of family - many times without any acknowledgement; I wanted to remember women who paved the way for many of us in academics and the workforce; I wanted to remember the women who still continue to fight for their identiy and self-respect; women who are in the middle of wars and still trying to keep their heads up; women who are expected to be superhumans and achieve that; women who simply want to exist; women who might not fit into the moulds society wants to put them in or women who are not included in them. Mostly, I want this day to be more than just "a day that we celebrate women every year and then forget".

Many of us who have never been to therapy might feel scared to talk to a stranger- and that is natural. But counseling can be very helpful for us to safely talk about what we are experiencing. Counseling is a form of talk therapy where we get to speak about our experiences with a trained professional. A well-trained psychologist is responsible for providing a safe, understanding, and non-judgmental space to us and working together to set goals that will help us. Counselling can be a long-term process so compatibility between our therapist and us is extremely important.

But it might have to do less with skills and more with how we weigh our options. While this isn't true for every situation, many times we make choices based on the chances of loss or success. An theory in psychology, known as the Signal Detection theory was developed based on an experiment to see how people percieved sound in the midst of noise. But this experiment also gave insight into how cautious and risk-taking people made choices differently. Cautious people made less mistakes in detecting the noise but they also missed a lot of right choices. Risk-takers on the other hand made more right choices when detecting the signal but they also made more mistakes (false positives) when trying to detect the signal.

There is no good or bad way of making choices. But cautious people might look at the risk while making every choice and risk-takers might not do that enough. Looking into our decision making style and practicing a way to balance both options (advantages and disadvantages) can sometimes help in making decisions in a holistic way.

Many times prioritizing our needs or those of others can be a dynamic process and never static.

instagram.com

Psyche_Bubbles on Instagram: "When we discussing meeting our needs we don't necessarily mean only focussing on ourselves. On the contrary, we aim to give importance to both our needs and wants as well as others'. Now, it might not be possible to do both at the same time. For example: There will be days when either you or the the other person in your life will require more attention, time and energy. But the thing is often we are encouraged to go out of our ways to help others (which is not necessarily bad) but when we start regarding our wants and needs we might be seen as selfish. But being stuck in one extreme or other (hyperfocusing on our needs might not always be helpful either) can lead to isolation, stress or even burnout. A few things that could help are-
1. Reviewing the past few days, weeks or months to see how much time we have spent meeting ours or others' wants and needs. It definitely helps to reflect and see where we stand. It can be a good starting point for any new intiative.

2. If we find ourselves focussing on others too much, we can always begin with making a list of things we enjoyed doing as kids (that we might want to revisit). Lists can be boring for some of us so, saving pictures of activities to try out can be a good "menu" of sorts. We can always pick and choose from those.

3. If we feel disconnected from others because we have had to focus on ourselves alone, then an actvity suggested in positive pychology is to do something for others without expecting a thank you from others (we don't have to make a habit out of it- moderation is key). They need not be extravagant gestures or things people ask from us. But rather, we have to observe the people in our lives and help accordingly.

4. Take moments to spend time with our own selves and loved ones. Now this might seem like a repetition of the points mentioned above. But this option doesnot involve any activities. Sometimes, listening to what we are feeling (both the good and the bad), spending quality time with people we care about (and who care about us) can be a simple way to be present.
